Understanding a family law professional's qualifications

We often write here on our blog about the importance of working with a legal professional who is up to date on recent developments in the law. After all, the law is constantly evolving, and what was true for a divorce, child custody, child support, adoption or similar case last year may not be true today.

We have to acknowledge, however, that this may seem easier said than done. Just how is the average Dallas resident supposed to gauge the experience and qualifications of a family law professional before entrusting him or her with what is likely a deeply sensitive, highly emotional dispute?

One way that the legal profession recognizes lawyers who are particularly well qualified to handle family law matters is something called board certification for family law. To qualify for certification by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a family law professional must have five years or more experience as a licensed attorney, with at least three years focusing on family law or another relevant practice area. He or she must also have handled a wide diversity of legal matters handled within that practice area.

There is a six-hour test that attorneys must pass, in addition to a peer evaluation component. Board-certified family law professionals must attend legal seminars and earn credits to keep them informed about changes in the law. Very few attorneys in Texas have earned board certification in family law.

One of those attorneys is Mary Ann Beaty. Residents may feel confident when looking for a board certified divorce and family law lawyer in Dallas that the Law Offices of Mary Ann Beaty, P.C. is fully qualified and capable of representing them in a wide range of family law issues.
